After Eight Years, Terminal’s 10.1 MW Still One of the Top Five Largest Rooftop Solar Arrays in the US
GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ — Gloucester Marine Terminal LLC, an affiliated company of Holt Logistics Corp., announced the completion of an additional 1.12 MW solar expansion at the Gloucester Marine Terminal. This expansion was completed in partnership with Independence Solar and supplements its existing 9.0 MW rooftop solar array that was completed in 2011. Independence Solar completed the 1.12 MW expansion project in December 2018, increasing the Terminal’s total solar capacity by 12% to 10.1 MW. Since the Terminal’s groundbreaking 9.0 MW installation in 2011, other companies have been inspired by the pioneering vision of the Holt family. With this expansion, the Terminal is again one of the top five largest rooftop solar installations in North America and is the largest outside of California.
The Gloucester Marine Terminal, located on 150 acres near the Walt Whitman Bridge on the Delaware River in Gloucester City, NJ, is a continuously-operating cold storage facility and is one of the largest energy users in the region. Historically, this energy has been supplied by the local utility at a significant cost. Holt has deployed solar energy at the Terminal to mitigate these high costs and to operate the Terminal in a sustainable manner. In selecting a solar partner, Holt Logistics vetted several national installers and chose to partner with Independence Solar due to their decade-plus of expertise, their previous work on the Terminal’s 2011 solar installation, and their ability to provide state-of-the-art technologies, including power optimizers with safe rapid shutdown capabilities.
The new 1.12 MW installation is located on the Terminal’s Building #3 warehouse and consists of 3,120 rooftop solar panels and 1,600 DC power optimizers, which maximize output from the solar panels and allow for safer operations. Independence Solar also designed the nine modular solar inverters to be located safely inside the warehouse. In addition to the solar work, the project integrated a complete re-work of the electric service to the north end of the Terminal, providing immediate energy savings and positioning the Terminal to expand refrigerated operations over the coming decades.
Leo Holt, President of Holt Logistics Corp., commented, “As a leading provider of supply chain solutions, Holt Logistics understands that every inch of space should be utilized effectively. This includes not only our warehousing operations and our port facilities but also our rooftops. We committed to sustainable operations in 2011 with our groundbreaking 9.0 MW solar installation and have reinforced our commitment with this Phase II investment in solar. Solar energy is an investment that provides returns to our customers, our employees, and to our community, but most importantly, to our planet. The Holt family believes that leadership on climate change comes through action, and we are fiercely committed to this effort for the long haul.”
Keith Peltzman, President at Independence Solar, shared, “We are honored that Holt Logistics selected Independence Solar as their solar partner. We acted as their development advisor on the original 2011 solar installation and appreciated the confidence they placed in Independence Solar by selecting us as their turnkey installation partner for Phase II. We will continue to maintain Holt’s solar investment as if it is our own asset and thank the Holt family for their trust.”
